Francisco Sérgio De Assis - Fazenda Terra Rica
A former president of the Federation of Coffee Producers from the Cerrado Mineiro, Francisco Sergio de Assis was born in Parana state, southern Brazil, and moved to Monte Carmelo after getting married to Ayumi Shimada. Her father, with whom Francisco established a partnership, was a pioneer who believed that the altitude and dry weather of the Cerrado during harvest season could make for excellent quality coffee. During the 1986 crisis, the land prices dropped significantly and they saw this as an opportunity to expand their properties and business altogether.
In 1992, Francisco and his father-in-law decided to invest in technology. They travelled the country looking for state-of-the-art irrigation methods and by implementing them, they received their first awards in 1993. Francisco believes that his success in the coffee business is due to entrepreneurship, good management practices and a strong sense of community spirit. His sons are already working in the farms and are being prepared to take them over in the near future. “But this will only happen if they have the passion for it. I am mainly concerned about their happiness, so it is really up to them.
