This high and mountainous area in the southern part of Honduras, borders Nicaragua. It is one of the oldest coffee growing areas in the country. Coffee is the primary source of income for over 1000 people in the area. Most farmers have smallholdings of around 4 – 5 hectares, with the coffee handpicked. The high altitude with good rainfall, rich volcanic soils and an average temperature of 17ºC are ideal for coffee.
