About the region

Producing Region

Yunnan [Arabica] Hainan and Fujian [Robusta]

Harvest

January

Coffee has been grown in China since 1920 then abandoned during the cultural revolution. Coffee production restarted in 1982.

Arabica coffee production is now focussed in the Yunnan Province, known for its high quality Pu’er’ tea. The area is mountainous with a temperate climate, fertile soils and on average, 280 days of sunshine per year. The area borders Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar with population of 46 million people. There are also small amounts of Robusta grown on the island of Hainan, situated in south China, and in Fujian province in the southeast. Coffee export in 2013/2014 was estimated at 1.2 million bags and production is estimated to double every five years. Germany has been China’s biggest importer.

Our sister company in China is working closely with growers in Yunnan and based on recent cuppings, we expect to some good quality washed and natural coffees begin to come through from this emerging origin.
